We are dedicated to equipping community residents with a strong foundation in public health issues within their communities, aiming to improve community health outcomes.

Class Syllabus

Session 1: Introduction(s) and Academy Overview
  • Introduce participants to the Community Health Academy (CHA)
  • Provide an overview of the importance of community health
  • Discuss current public health challenges in the community
  • Explain how community health training benefits the community
  • Identify the target audience for the training
  • Explore factors that impact community health
Session 2: Health Disparities & Social Determinants of Health
  • Understand how social and economic factors influence health outcomes
  • Identify health disparities within the community
  • Discuss the concept of social determinants of health
Session 3: Epidemiology and Biostatistics
  • Understand the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics
  • Learn how to interpret health data
Session 4: Health Promotion & Disease
  • Provide an overview of strategies for health promotion and disease prevention
  • Explore the development and implementation of community health programs
Session 5: Nutrition & Physical Activity
  • Understand the importance of healthy eating and physical activity
  • Learn how to develop and implement community programs promoting healthy lifestyles

Session 10: Aging & Chronic Disease

Session 11: Healthcare Systems & Policy
  • Understand how healthcare systems and policies impact health outcomes

Session 12: Cultural Competence & Health Equity

15 weeks of in-person classes.

Class Information

The Community Health Academy offers classes exclusively on Tuesdays for a duration of 15 weeks. All classes will be conducted in person.

Tuesday Classes: 6:00 to 8:00pm

Who can join?

Community members, healthcare professionals, students, researchers, leaders, volunteers, and advocates interested in improving community health. No prior experience required.

When is the application deadline?

Application deadline: August 1st.

Admission notifications August 14th.
