Data note

What this snapshot represents

This snapshot follows the school-district geography used in EHCEC’s Bridges Out of Poverty presentation: Channelview, Crosby, Galena Park and Sheldon. The four district areas represent 212,323 residents, approximately 4.4% of Harris County’s 4,838,303 residents.

Source: American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates, using the district-level tables developed with support from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University.

The Region view shows the range of district median household incomes, poverty rates, uninsured rates and household internet-access rates. These ranges are not combined regional averages. Poverty rates refer to people for whom poverty status was determined. Internet access refers to households.

Regional renter cost burden is 10,115 of 20,739 renter households (48.8%). District rates use each district’s renter households. Cost burden means housing costs above 30% of household income (ACS Table B25140).

These figures describe all residents and households in district areas, not student enrollment. Community Tabulation Areas and ZIP Code Areas have different boundaries and should not be added to these populations. Estimates have sampling uncertainty and do not explain the causes of local conditions.

JUAN REYES
Youth Engagement & Career Coach Workforce Solutions – East End

A stronger East Harris County begins with understanding the barriers people face. Through Bridges Out of Poverty, EHCEC brought regional partners together to explore generational poverty and strengthen pathways to opportunity. For Juan Reyes of Workforce Solutions, the training offered insights into the hidden rules that shape young people’s experiences—and how to better support them as they pursue education and careers.

“Understanding generational poverty helps me support young people and their future careers.”

— Juan Reyes, Workforce Solutions

Carl Brown
Vice President at Regions Financial

Building a stronger East Harris County starts with preparing young people for what comes next. Through Males, Money & More, EHCEC partnered with Regions Bank to help students across the region build practical financial skills. The interactive Reality Check experience connected budgeting and everyday decisions to a larger goal: greater financial stability for future generations.

“A lot of the kids came back around to each station, re-evaluating the choices that they made.”

— Carl Brown, Regions Bank
